First impression of the PLX-1000: a beautiful platinum all black, sober, simple, classy. Clearly, we feel the influence of the Technics SL-1210 M5G in the design of the PLX-1000 in terms of ergonomics… Apart from the Start/Stop button which is round, as on the Pioneer CD players! The chassis seems to be the same as that of the Technics, and for the arrangement of the various elements: nothing special, it is classic and efficient. So no difficulty to adapt to it. Performance and technical details of the PLX-1000:- powerful engine: torque 4.5 kg/cm (33t start in 0.3 seconds). In comparison, the Technics SL1200 mks2 have an engine torque of 1.5 kg/cm (starting in 33t in 0.7 seconds).
We therefore have a competition engine, ideal for being very responsive in tempo setting, and above all for violently scratching! Unfortunately, there is no Reverse function to rotate the pan backwards. – The pitch: you have the choice between +/- 8% (classic), +/- 16% (as on the Technics 1200 M5G) and +/- 50% (this is rare on turntables, in practice this is unnecessary except in certain special cases). No unnecessary notch (which « clicks ») at 0% like on mk2, so less potential wear at this level. – Reset button for the pitch: it allows you to return to the original tempo of the song in the blink of an eye, which can allow you to make tempo « jumps » easily. For example, your song currently playing rotates with the pitch at -1%, and, just before a drop, you press this Reset button to instantly raise the tempo to 0% This functionality is far from essential, and it can even be annoying if you put the edge of your hand on the turntable while you raise his arm …: – / – No Master Tempo (also called « Key Lock »). Too bad, it would have multiplied the possibilities in harmonic mix… – The arm: in « S », with anti-skating adjustment, height adjustable by 6 mm. Its insulation is particularly well worked to reduce potential harmful vibrations. – Plate supplied without cell. – Reading in 33t and 45t, no 78t.
cables torn out in the flight case, or to be able to easily change them in the event of a malfunction! – Stop button of the turntable: protected by a ring to avoid an unwanted motor-off in full mix in public (story lived with Technics SL-1200 mk2 which did not have this protection! ). – Heavy structure (over 13 kg): good because it absorbs vibrations. Conclusion on the PLX-1000: Pioneer therefore offers a professional turntable very close to the Technics 1210 M5G, with the price that goes with it (around 650 €!)… In terms of functionality and innovation, they didn’t go too far at Pioneer DJ with this first model, given its high selling price compared to what the competition offers in high-end turntables! For a slightly lower budget (600 €), you can buy a Reloop RP-8000 with its integrated MIDI controls, nice if you want to mix with DJ software! And for less (450 € with cell) but with an equally powerful engine, you have the Stanton STR8-150… Solidity level in the long term, we will have to wait several decades of use to know if it’s worth Technics … We can expect to see PLX-1000s gradually replacing the Technics in future club house management, given the already well-established presence of the manufacturer. Indeed, for an establishment manager, it is easier to order all his DJ equipment (vinyl turntables + CD turntables + mixer …) from the same supplier … good job Pionner!
